From straws to styrofoam: Dubai bans single-use plastics in 2025
Six items prohibited under the new ban
Dubai has taken a bold step in its fight against plastic waste as a new ban comes into effect on January 1, 2025.
The emirate has prohibited several single-use plastic items, including Styrofoam cups, plastic straws, stirrers, table covers, and cotton swabs with plastic stems.
This sweeping measure builds on earlier restrictions, marking a significant milestone in its push for sustainability.
The Executive Council Resolution No. (124) of 2023, championed by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, outlines the roadmap for Dubai’s transition towards sustainability. This legislation mandates businesses to promote eco-friendly alternatives and contribute to a circular economy.
Ban on single-use plastics
The ban, implemented by Dubai Municipality, aims to phase out disposable plastic products across the city. The following items are now prohibited:
- Styrofoam food containers
- Single-use Styrofoam cups
- Plastic straws
- Plastic stirrers
- Plastic table covers
- Plastic cotton swabs
This comes in addition to the ban on single-use plastic bags introduced in June 2024.
What’s next?
The government’s plan is structured in phases to ensure smooth adaptation:
- June 2024: Single-use plastic bags banned.
- January 2025: Styrofoam and other listed items phased out.
- January 2026: Ban to extend to plastic cups, lids, cutlery, and food containers.
What are the alternatives for plastic items?
Residents can expect reusable or biodegradable alternatives to become the norm. For instance, paper straws will replace plastic ones, and Styrofoam containers will give way to cardboard or biodegradable options. Cotton swabs with bamboo stems are also becoming popular substitutes.
This progressive ban aligns with Dubai’s broader goals to foster an eco-conscious society while reducing environmental harm. Residents and businesses alike are encouraged to embrace these changes for a more sustainable future.
